Recycling: City Neighborhoods to Compete for New Toters through January 31, 2011 The City of New Haven has kicked-off the neighborhood recycling competition, and you could be next to receive new toters! On August 8, Westville, the neighborhood with the highest recycling rate, was the first one to receive the 48-gallon new brown toters for trash, and convert the 96-gallon blue toters to recycling receptacles. Since then, the curbside recycling rate in the neighborhood jumped from 12 to almost 30 percent! The new single stream recycling program allows New Haven residents to place all recyclables into a single bin, without sorting at home. Sorting is done instead through a mostly automated process at the recycling facility. This significantly increases recycling rates, since it is more convenient for residents, and more materials are recyclable. All households with curbside recycling are part of the single-stream system. However, having the recycling toters is more advantageous: they allow for a higher quantity of materials to be recycled, and they have a lid, preventing rainwater and pests from getting inside. Your neighborhood can be next to receive them! The neighborhood competition will run through January 31, 2011. To do your part, please recycle all the materials listed here, and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.
